Syncopation and Flow

Original Works in Wood by Terry Bachman

Terry Bachman’s work with wood has been inspired over the years by the Shakers, Arts and Crafts furniture, and traditional Japanese joinery. In the past few years, he has moved from interpreting traditional styles to more personal studio furniture, wall-hung “wood mosaics” and free standing sculpture.  He continues to work with clients to create commissioned pieces that reflect their vision as well as his own—well proportioned, perfectly joined, and painstakingly finished. Terry has a passion for transforming rough-cut lumber into elegant objects that are pleasing to the eye and smooth to the touch.

After graduating from Bard College, Terry Bachman moved to New England where he spent thirteen years building houses, furniture and cabinets; including three years as apprentice to master furniture maker A. W. Palmer. During this time he also built his own home from salvaged barn timbers, helped to reconstruct musician Neil Young’s 1900 Baltic schooner, and restored an ancient gatehouse in Portugal.

Later, he moved to California where he began a ten-year career importing Portuguese wines. During this period he became a devotee of the Arts & Crafts movement of the 1910’s and 20’s.  Terry returned the east coast and to woodworking full time, ultimately opening his Tangram Woodworks studio in Cumberland, Maryland.
Terry has shown work in a number of juried and invitational exhibitions, and has won awards and press accolades for both furniture and sculpture.  His work may be found in private and corporate collections from New England to California.   The Allegany County (MD) Public Library System commissioned a suite of four sculptures for the award-winning “Enchanted Forest” reading space for children.
