THE BIRTHDAY PARTY -- Washington County Arts Council celebrates 39 years of nurturing the arts in our community

The Board of Directors, staff, membership and friends of the Washington County Arts Council will celebrate the WCAC's 39th birthday at the WCAC Gallery from 6-8pm on November 14th. This informal celebration will include perspectives on the past year, visions and goals for the coming year, and also announcement of the WCAC Community Arts Development Grants awards for 2007.
The Washington County Arts Council was born in the Fall of 1967, when citizens interested in the arts met at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts to discuss ways to encourage and nurture the arts locally. The Arts Council thus was formed to aid and advise the cultural arts in Washington County, and to integrate the arts into the total life of the communities it serves.
Maryland was one of the first states in the nation to create a state council for the arts, when the General Assembly enacted legislation declaring it the policy of the State to strive to create a nurturing climate for the arts and recognizing that the arts are a vital part of Maryland's culture and heritage. Shortly thereafter, the Washington County Arts Council was formally incorporated in 1968, making it one of the very first such agencies in the State of Maryland.
