Local wind quintet celebrates 20 years!

The Appalachian Wind Quintet celebrates its 20th anniversary with a concert of its favorite works on Sunday, April 1st, 2:30pm at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. The group gave its inaugural program at the Museum in 1987, and since that time has presented hundreds of concerts, won several competitions, and has been awarded grants from Chamber Music America, The Maryland Arts Council, and Washington County Arts Council.

Members of the Appalachian Wind Quintet are Barbara Spicher, flute; Ed Stanley; oboe; Rick Mogensen, clarinet; Scott Cassada, bassoon; Ed Schupp, horn. The group is in residence at St. Mark?s Lutheran Church in Hagerstown where it rehearses.

The mainstay of the group?s activities has been a recital series presented with the support of the Washington County Arts Council and Music Performance Trust Fund. In an effort to bring live chamber music to the region and provide performance opportunites to the groups five musicians, the concerts have been presented at many area churches, festivals, and schools. The groups first recording, 19th Century Music for Winds, was released in 2005.

The Quintet?s first public performance in 1987 included the work, Three Short Pieces, by Jacques Ibert, and the quintet will include this work on the anniversary program. The major work prepared by the ensemble for the Baltimore Chamber Music Awards Competition was the Quintet by Carl Nielsen. Since their performance won them a First Place Award in 1997, they have included the the Nielsen Quintet on the anniversary concert. Passacaille, by Adrien Barthe, has been performed on many programs as the group?s concert opener. This sprightly composition will open the anniversary concert program.

Guest pianist, Dr. Noel Lester, Chair of the Department of Music at Hood College, has collaborated with the Appalachian Wind Quintet on many occassions and will perform with the group on April 1st with a performance of Quintet in E-flat, K.407, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This seldom heard composition exemplifies Mozart?s mastery of chamber music and demonstrates the sheer artistry of all performers. Dr. Lester also recorded the Sextet by Ludwig Thuille with the group, and they will also perform the last movement from that work.

This concert is sponsored in part by the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, the Washington County Arts Council, and the Music Performance Trust Fund. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information contact the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts at 301-739-5727.
