The Washington County Arts Council Gallery is pleased to announce its next exhibition: ?Talisman for the Journey? ? works by Rhonda Smith. The exhibit will open April 21 and conclude May 26. Opening receptions are free and open to the public Saturday, April 21 6-8pm and Sunday, April 22 2-4pm.
Smith, a Keedysville resident, is a professor of art at Shepherd University. Her recent exhibitions include a one-person show in conjunction with the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown in 2006 and exhibits at West Virginia State College and the Shenandoah Arts Council Gallery in Winchester, VA.
The artist?s work is inspired imagery and symbolism she encountered on a trip to Mali, West Africa in 2003. In her recent work she combines those with ideas she first encountered earlier among the Baule and Suenfo of Cote d?Ivoire. ?My work is a melding of the common threads and understandings through familiar images and symbols of West Africa and my personal and largely western cultural and artistic experience,? says Smith. ?This series is a reflection on the power of images, materials and words as instruments to convey feelings and connections amomg people. Among the Taureg and Bamana peoples there is an understanding that the amulets and talisman contain the power of knowledge attainable only through personal commitment. Art is a similar investment that requires both the maker and the viewer to continue to seek a greater understanding in order fully appreciate and understand the power within the object.?
The Washington County Arts Council is located at 14 West Washington in historic downtown Hagerstown. Hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10am-3pm, Saturday 10am-2pm, and by appointment.
