Mosaics in the Mountains: Contemporary Mosaic Exhibit in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND, Maryland 07/30/07 - A group of more than 25 contemporary mosaic artists based in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC will be displaying recent works at the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts in Cumberland, Maryland from August 5-26, 2007. The opening is Sunday, August 5, 2007 from 1 to 4pm. Call 301-724-5800 for information.

Art lovers have a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of mosaics in a public show devoted exclusively to this form. On view will be work utilizing a tremendous array of materials such as various types of glass, ceramic, stone, and even fabric, and created in a range of techniques from those originating in the Roman Empire and, later, Italy, and handed down through generations, to those developed recently by the featured artists.

Mosaics as architectural embellishment has a long lineage and has evolved over the years to also encompass significant aesthetic endeavors separate from the building trades. The last twenty years has seen a major global resurgence of this art form, particularly in the United States.

Alfredo Ratinoff, of Argentine descent, trained in ceramics with Teodolina Garcia Cabo in Buenos Aires, and at the National School of Ceramics. He also studied drawing and painting at the National Art Academy. His large scale installations and other works are in many private collections and have been widely exhibited in the United States, including at the Museum of the Americas and the N.A.S.A. headquarters in Washington, DC. He is on the faculty of the Smithsonian Institution and the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

To highlight just a few of the other artists: Gene Sterud transitioned from a career in anthropology and archaeology to work in mosaics, with a specialization in the replication of ancient works. He has instructed over 400 students in the art of mosaics in the last six years. Bonnie Fitzgerald earned a Master of Mosaico certification at Orsoni Smalti Veneziani in Venice. Through her firm, Maverick Mosaics, he teaches, and has produced major installations throughout the Washington, DC area. Sherri Loomis trained with Rick Shelly, a master mosaic artist who learned the art in Venice. In her new work, she combines glass, metal and found objects to create evocative panels and sculpture with the motif of ladders.?

About SAMADC and Society of American Mosaic Artists: Please note that although several of the artists exhibiting in Mosaics in the Mountains are members of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, SAMA did not organize this exhibition. SAMA's next juried exhibition of mosaic art, to which members are invited to submit work for consideration, will be held in Miami, FL during April 2008.
