World-renowned Philadelphia dance company to perform at Maryland Theatre

(HAGERSTOWN, MD.) - The Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco) will
perform at the Maryland Theatre on Saturday, September 15, 2007, at 7pm. Philadanco is a modern contemporary dance company that tours
nationally and internationally for sold-out audiences. The company
performs as many as 50-60 concerts and 45 residencies annually, reaching
an estimated 100 million people a year through broadcasts, and over
100,000 people in live audiences.
"I have worked with Philadanco in NYC," said Brian Sullivan, Executive
Director of the Maryland Theater. "It brings me great pleasure to have
invited the dance company to perform at the Maryland Theatre to share
the energetic power to our area. I want to witness children and parents
dancing as they leave the Theatre, after seeing the show."
Philadanco was founded by Joan Myers Brown in 1970. The company was one
of the first companies to hire its dancers on a 52 week salary, the
first to own housing for the dancers, and the first to own a debt-free
facility. It was also the company that founded the International
Conference of Black Dance Companies and International Association of
Blacks in Dance.
Over the years, Philadanco has trained thousands of dancers. The
instruction and training program consists of 40 weeks of intensive
training in various dance techniques by nationally renowned teachers in
ballet, jazz, modern and distinct techniques. Each participant is
selected by open auditions monitored by teachers, supporters and staff.
Instruction and training participants experience a wide range of
opportunities to learn, work and perform. On Saturday afternoon, 30
local dance students will be benefiting from the company's expertise,
through the specially-arranged Philadanco's Master Class.
"Philadanco's dancers are a miracle of skill and energy," according to
Dance Magazine. "They work in a range of idioms most companies don't
even try to possess . . . A company that can do more than just anything.
It can represent the possibilities of human spirit through dance."
Philadanco has appeared throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, the
United Kingdom, and the Caribbean. Saturday's performance in Hagerstown
is presented by the Maryland Theatre and the Washington County Arts
Council. For tickets, call the Maryland Theatre ticket office on
weekdays from 8am - 4pm at 301-790-2000 or visit the Maryland
Theatre online at www.mdtheatre.org. All tickets for the performance
cost $20.
The Maryland Theatre is the premier landmark for the arts in Washington
County. The theatre originally opened in 1915 to sold-out crowds and
has since survived economic hardship, fire, and years of neglect. In
1976 a group organized to revitalize the building and had it added to
the National Register of Historic Buildings. Today, the Theatre
continues to bring top-name acts and events from around the world. It
is also the home of the Miss Maryland Pageant and the Maryland Symphony
Orchestra. The Theatre is the anchor of Maryland's first
state-designated Arts and Entertainment District.
