John Simpson

John Simpson, a resident of Berekely Springs, West Virginia, creates hand hewn wooden bowls. A craft that can be traced back to the Stone Age, hand hewn wooden bowls once played a central part in the lives of everyday people. They have since been reduced to a few third world countries and antique shops which occasionally display these pieces from a bygone era.

Because of the labor intense, time consuming nature of this craft, hand-hewning bowls from a solid piece of wood is almost a lost art form in this day and age. These pieces of work display the inner beauty of the tree they were made from, along with the unique tool markings of the adz.
