The Maryland Theatre Expansion Project
Decorative Lighting Fixture
The Maryland Theatre seeks an artist to create a permanent indoor light fixture to be installed on the top floor event space within the expansion. Work should be completed or well underway by Winter 2019. The total budget for the work is to be determined with artist input. The call is open to all artists living within a 100-mile radius of The Maryland Theatre. This artist call is presented in partnership with the Washington County Arts Council.
The Maryland Theatre seeks artists to design a lighting fixture to be installed within the 4th level event space. The fixture must be well-integrated and functional as it will be installed permanently. The event space is on the top floor of the expansion facility and will be utilized to host a wide variety of events including, but not limited to, small performances, banquets, dances, and trade shows. Of special interest are elements created to match the designed interiors of the space per the attachments. The selection panel is also open to salvaged materials or any materials and approaches that are safe, durable, and low-maintenance in a permanent indoor setting.
The project seeks art with appeal to visitors of all ages on both visual and conceptual levels. The fixture should be stimulating to the imagination and safe for long-term use indoors. The fixture will be the focal point of the event space as it will be hung in the center of the ceiling, surrounded by a large dome with lighting around the edge of the dome. The fixture must be integrated into the site to create visual drama and yet be appropriate to the scale of the event space. See the drawings attached for the building design and event space details.
The lighting design needs to provide adequate light for the event space and the proposed artist needs to integrate the light source into their design. The current base building will be providing 3 locations for 120v power supply size up to 500w each. The base building is also assuming LED lighting with 0-10v dimming controls or ELV dimming (See Sheet E-2.5 below).

The artist’s total budget for artwork must include all ancillary costs such as travel, insurance, and transportation. The Maryland Theatre will be responsible for the installation of the fixture. The artist should be prepared to be on-site for this installation as it will be scheduled.
The Light Fixture must uphold artistic excellence and celebration of the arts, but could also reference art history and preservation as this relates to the historic Theatre.
