In June two artists— Marion Griffin and Sarah Higgins— will have solo exhibitions at TAG/The Artists Gallery.
Marion Griffin will show work inspired by gardens in an exhibition titled “Interpretations.” “The joy of contemplation is at its peak when I am one with nature,” explained Griffin. “As a long time meditator, I am inspired by the beauty of gardens, especially the famous Innisfree Gardens in New York and the gardens I’ve created around my home. Intuitive by nature, I long to find and paint the prevailing spirit, the essence of what is beneath and sometimes hidden in gardens.” As a former dancer and an Abstract Expressionist, Griffin explores movement, space, exuberant color and the essence of beauty— “All of which are endless in a garden,” she said. “Gardens inspire me to be more sensitive and pay closer attention to all that is there, seen and not seen... something I am constantly searching for in my art.”
Sarah Higgins will show a series of new paintings titled “Balanced Chaos.” “I love color— which is obvious— and design, which I hope is also obvious,” Higgins said. “On the other hand I also strive for a sense of movement and energy that may even be chaotic at times. My challenge is to make it all work.” Higgins feels that, as a painter she is “only part of the equation. I produce the work, but you view the work. You bring your own perspective into the process. It may or may not be what I thought I was conveying. “One of the reasons I enjoy doing abstracts is that they are not dictatorial,” she said. “You see what you want to see.” In addition to the solo exhibitions, TAG will have a new show of work by the other members of the gallery. Since “Easels in Frederick” takes place during June, the members show at TAG will feature landscapes and landscape-inspired work. These exhibitions all run from June 3 through 26, with a reception from 5 to 9pm during First Saturday on June 4.
TAG, at 216 North Market Street, Frederick, is open Friday and Saturday from noon to 8pm and on Sunday from noon to 5pm, or by appointment. Learn more at theartistsgalleryfrederick.com
