In April TAG/The Artists Gallery will feature two solo exhibitions: black and white photographs by Jim Mitchell and oil paintings by Kate Miller.
Photographer Jim Mitchell’s “Into the Night” is a visual journey along the dark streets of some of Europe’s most famous cities.
“Night is a intriguing and often mysterious time for the locals and tourists alike,” Mitchell said. “I believe it is the time that the city actually begins to come to life. When the sun goes down, the energy on the streets intensifies. The mood of the people and the city changes.”
Mitchell has found the night to be “a time of fun, excitement and even danger. The work day is over and the job of enjoying life begins.”
The photographs in this exhibit were taken over a three-year period in some of the cities that Mitchell finds to be the most enjoyable: Budapest, London, Prague, Paris and Vienna.
“Please come along with me on this visual journey down the streets I have enjoyed living life on and have had the pleasure to photograph,” he said.
Painter Kate Miller’s “Portraits and Still Lifes” features portraits that capture the sitter’s personality and still lifes that observe the beauty in small compositions of everyday objects.
Kate Miller specializes in large impressionist portraits of live sitters that attempt to capture their presence. The paintings in her current show are mostly of models from two open studios she’s been attending for the past year. She paints in oils at a scale slightly larger than life-sized.
“I'm dealing with several tensions at this point in my work,” Miller said. “I’m pulled between wanting to preserve my expressive, fresh underdrawing, done with a large brush, and wanting to continue on to a more finished painting; between degrees of impressionism and realism; between defining with line and defining with modeling; between flat surface design and depth; and between making the model part of a composition or letting the model stand alone. The paintings in this show demonstrate some of the different resolutions I've arrived at over the past year.”
Miller, who has an MFA from the University of Delaware, grew up in the D.C. suburbs but lived in Ohio for several decades. She recently moved back to this area and joined the local art scene. This show is her Frederick debut.
In addition to the solo exhibitions, TAG will also have a new show of work by members of the gallery. These shows all run from March 31 through April 30, with an opening reception from 5 to 9pm during First Saturday on April 1.
