In September TAG/The Artists Gallery will feature two solo exhibitions of paintings and photographs: Joanna Morrison’s “Flowers and Figures” and Patricia Stockman’s “Departure.”
Morrison, a long-time member of TAG, is taking a look backward with her new show. “Having no day job this year and more time for my art, I did a little stroll down memory lane,” she says. “I looked at old work— including twenty years of sketchbooks. It was fun!
“Artists are usually so self-critical— what painting ever feels perfect when we put the brush down?” she muses. “But looking back, I see originality and a persistent style, with rhythmic, colorful, well-composed pieces.
“I always find motivation in subject matter with personal meaning. So I reinterpreted two prior paintings.”
For example “In the Library,” first done in 1988, became Joanna and her husband, Bob, as they are at this time of life. A painting titled “April,” from 2010, inspired a new one called “Spring.”
Morrison invites people to come see what she has been looking at for the last twenty years in a show that features not separate floral or figurative images, but flowers and figures combined.
Patricia Stockman is holding her first solo exhibition at TAG. Her photo-based art has been featured in many area shows and venues, but this new show is precisely what its title claims.
“Departure,” an ethereal study of time and space, reveals a sense of freedom and anonymity through transparent child-like figures as they meld with their surroundings.
“This series began as a need to step outside of myself, to depart, photographically from my comfort zone,” Stockman says. “I’ve ‘abandoned’ Photoshop. These pieces contain no digital collaging— just the camera and the subject, and a watchful eye for just the right conditions.”
For Stockman these unaltered digital photographs move closer toward the essence of photography: capturing light and movement in a single instant.
“The un-tethered, weightless figures isolate a random moment in time,” she says. “They capture the light and color of their environment, becoming one with the air, earth, or water. As they bond with their surroundings, they randomly interact with one another and form a relationship with the viewer. Printed on metal, these images have no bounds and seemingly float off the wall themselves.”
In addition to the solo exhibitions, TAG will also have a new show of work by the other members of the gallery. These shows all run from Friday, Sept. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 1, with a reception from 5 to 9pm during First Saturday on Sept. 2..
