In December TAG/The Artists Gallery will feature two solo exhibitions. Christina Lund will show a series of paintings titled “Town and Country,” and Christine Stovall will show paintings from a series called “Undercurrent.”

Christina Lund has lived in Frederick since 1977. She studied art in Minnesota, Lebanon, France, California, West Virginia, Baltimore, and in Washington DC. She retired from 20 years of teaching art in 2011, and since then has been exploring plein air painting and enjoying making paintings of places in and around Frederick County.

“I love to work with paint and color,” says Lund. “I like expressing the fluidity of the oil paint while appreciating the underlying structure of the composition, lights and darks, lines and shapes, warms and cools. I think of plein air painting as honing my craft and living in the moment. I try to capture a moment in time with my landscapes, bringing out the color and movement I see. I also like to paint people and capture what I have experienced with my subjects as I’m working.

“I find that making art is extremely satisfying— a personal journey that makes my life more meaningful. I’m still learning about that journey and discovering where I am going in art.”

“Town and Country” includes scenes painted in and around Frederick County, many filled with a sense of exuberance due to her brush strokes and use of color.

Lund has been a member of the Frederick County Art Association and Delaplaine Visual Art Center since the 1980s; The Artists’ Gallery since 2007; and the Frederick Plein Air Artists since 2013.

Christine Stovall’s “Undercurrent” explores the world of water.

“Since the summer of 2010, my husband Mike and I have spent time kayaking on short trips in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. and longer trips to New England and Canada’s maritime provinces.

“Time on the water, whether on the Potomac River or on the coast of Nova Scotia, provides a different perspective on the world. This past summer we lived for a week on a small island off the south-west coast of Nova Scotia. Life on Bell Island is slow, with no cell phone, internet or TV to connect you to your other world. On a peninsula with water on three sides and two kayaks for transportation, life shifts to a different place and time when water was the center of life.

“This show of works in oil and clay is an exploration of that watery world, the flora and fauna that inhabit it, as well as those creatures who soar above it,” she says. “My oil paintings are recognizable, often verging on the abstract. Nature's colors are altered. The linear pattern, shapes and paint quality are exploited. My clay wall hangings and small sculptures are drawings on clay.”

Stovall is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a Studio Art degree and has a Masters in Art Therapy. She studied at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington, D.C. She has taught for 25 years as a high school art teacher in the Frederick County Public School system. Her pieces are in private collections throughout the U.S.

Also during December, all members of TAG will have pieces in the annual “Small Works” show. Work in all media will be modestly priced with holiday gift-giving in mind. Art from this show may be taken home when purchased.

These three shows will run from December 1 through 31, with an opening reception from 5 to 9pm on First Saturday on Dec. 2. Music that evening will be performed by Bruce Wilkin on the violin and Chas Fowler on the Scottish smallpipes. The solo artists are also holding a reception for friends and family on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 7 to 9pm.
