TAG/The Artists Gallery will present a show in January called "ARTrage!” Work by gallery members and invited artists will comment on pressing issues that confront our world. The exhibition will include thought-provoking and confrontational looks at hard subjects including climate change, injustice, human rights, immigration, war, politics, and poverty.
Maybe it’s no accident that many of the pieces are “mixed media.”
Diane Santarella shows us Captain America’s tee-shirt hanging on a line of barbed wire against a sky filled with roiling clouds or smoke.
Julie Maynard covered the silhouette of a woman with letters that urge the viewer to “trust me,” mixed with “shhhh.” The edge of a torn flag hangs under a silhouette of caged birds.
Lesa Cook’s chilling “Ghosts” is a charcoal drawing of a white-robed and hooded figure holding a small child clad in similar robes.
Deborah Winram’s “Consequences” shows brushfuls of white paint dragged over a textured black background that suggests a waterfall running over toxic waste.
It won’t all be serious. Expect some of the work to be comical or abstract— and some of it to even be beautiful. The goal? To start conversations and bring the community together to talk about what’s important to us.
“ARTrage!” will run from January 5 through 28, with an opening reception from 5 to 9pm during First Saturday on January 6.
