In June TAG/The Artists Gallery will feature two solo exhibitions.
In “Prints & Paintings 2018,” Linda Slattery Sherman will focus on the environment as subject matter and on the use of line as expression.
In the past two years Sherman has focused on exploring gelatin printing, making a variety of plate sizes with a combination of unflavored gelatin, glycerine and water. The results are highly experimental, often producing a surprise after each pull.
"That’s the fun of it,” Sherman says. “I get images that I would never get by painting alone."
She will be conducting a workshop later this year at the Delaplaine in Frederick on gelatin printing, "printing without a press."
Sherman will also be showing new abstract painting. “I’m excited about the larger works I’m creating that involve the use of line and bright color,” she says.
In the second solo show, Patricia Stockman will use the digital collage process to explore movement in and out of spaces that exist somewhere between real and surreal.
“‘This Way Through’ is an invitation for viewers to move in and out of the spaces I have created through the digital collage process,” Stockman says. “Within this series, doors, windows and hallways become the vehicle for the viewer’s movement. ‘There are things known and things unknown and in between are the doors of perception’— that’s attributed to and adapted from Jim Morrison, Aldous Huxley, and William Blake.”
Working exclusively with Photoshop, Stockman allows dreams, random thoughts, and the detail-oriented process of photo collage to inform her work. “I have long been drawn to abandoned spaces, repetition, and the creation of a place that does not really exist,” she says. “I refer to this as digital storytelling. Often the resulting images reflect a time and space that is in limbo, caught somewhere between real and surreal.
“Is there a clear explanation or a concrete ‘why’ to my images? No. It is simply an invitation to come and explore.”
