March 28, 2012Local artist Cindy Roberts Downs says she had a “standing painting date with my father, watercolorist, Clyde Roberts. We became a familiar sight with all our gear set up in the rural countryside…..I give my father full credit for instilling this passion of art in me and I am still continuing our tradition.” Downs and five other local artists will show their work, all which reveal Clyde’s influence, at Washington County Arts Council in the “Family and Friends of Clyde” exhibit that opens on April 6, 2012. Clyde Roberts taught art classes part-time at the Hagerstown Junior College, and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. After retirement, he taught drawing and painting at Shepherd College and Penn State/Mont Alto. Roberts was a life member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, a signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, a member of the Chambersburg Art Alliance, the Valley Art Association, the Studio Club of Waynesboro, and was listed in the Who's Who in American Art. Work on display will include pieces by Clyde Roberts, (1923 -2011), a former supervisor of art for Washington County Public Schools; Cindy Roberts Downs; Ruth Durbin; Virginia Hair; Kent Roberts; Bob Wantz; and Lee Weaver. The Washington County Arts Council will host an opening reception on Friday, April 13, 2012 from 5-7pm at the gallery located at 14 W Washington Street just off the square in downtown Hagerstown. The exhibit runs from 4/6/2012 through 5/1/2012. For information, contact gallery manager, Ashley Durboraw.301-791-3132 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
