Project Description:
The Washington County Arts Council, Inc. (WCAC) invites visual artists to paint Plein Air (outdoors) in historic Hagerstown, Maryland in June 2022, creating original artwork that will be exhibited from August 4, 2022 through September 6, 2022 in the Washington County Arts Council galleries. Selected artists will enjoy a virtual exhibit, an in-gallery exhibit, jurors awards, and a people’s choice award. COVID-19 precautions including virtual receptions, staggered check-ins, and expanded boundaries may be implemented. Saturdays in June will be promoted to the public as the Washington County Arts Council Plein Air Days in Hagerstown, so visitors will know if they come to identified locations on those days, they may find artists hard at work creating images inspired by our city. The event is intended to support the arts, inspire others to encourage their inner artistic spirit, draw people to explore historic Hagerstown, and motivate potential art patrons to come out for the exhibit opening and purchase their favorite work.

All artists working en plein air in oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, colored pencil, or watercolor are eligible to apply.

Application Selection Requirements:
To be considered for selection, artists must submit up to three images of artwork completed in the past two years and a bio with their artist statement. Examples should represent the artist’s best! Each image must be a separate jpg file. Each image file should be labeled using ArtistName_Title format. Images should not exceed 2 MB.

Additional Required Documents:
Bio and artist statement should be in a .docx, .doc, or .txt file format with the filename ArtistName_Bio.docx, ArtistName_Bio.doc, or ArtistName_Bio.txt.
PR/Media Release Form must also be provided.
PLEASE NOTE: You may also include the digitally completed and digitally signed PR/Media Release Form (.pdf file). If not included when you submit and you are selected, you will be asked to complete it when you drop off your artwork.
All application materials must be submitted online by 11:59pm on Sunday, May 15, 2022. Faxed, photographed, mailed, emailed, incomplete, or late applications will not be accepted.

Once selected, juried artists will be expected to attend one or more of the Saturdays in June 2022 and produce one to three artworks in that time and place, en plein air (without the use of photographs). The chosen locations for the 2022 plein air days in June are Downtown Hagerstown, the Hagerstown Cultural Trail, and Hagerstown’s City Park. Artists may choose where they would like to paint in those locations and whether to come out for one Saturday or more.
Juried artists’ paintings are to be exhibited in WCAC’s Gallery at 34 S Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD beginning August 4, 2022. Included artworks for the exhibition will need to be ready-to-hang and will be required to stay in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit through September 6, 2022.

Commission Agreement/Sales:
All work must be available for sale. WCAC, a non-profit agency, retains a 30% commission on all works sold during the exhibit.

If selected, hanging works should be properly wired with eye hooks placed approximately 1/3 from the top of the work and framing wire of appropriate weight should be used. No saw tooth hangers, please. See attached Hanging Specifications document. All work must be labeled on the back with artist name, title, and price.
WCAC will not exhibit any work that is presented in an unprofessional manner and reserves the right of final review on all work once it has been delivered.
Work cannot be withdrawn before the end of the exhibit.

Selected artists will paint during one or more Saturdays in June 2022. Artists are required to check in at the Washington County Arts Council located at 34 S. Potomac St., Suite 100, Hagerstown, MD 21740 each Saturday. Someone from WCAC will be travelling around town to photograph artists as they paint en plein air. Checking in allows WCAC to know where artists are located so they may photograph them for marketing and publicity.

A 30% commission will be retained by WCAC on all sales of artwork included in the exhibit, as well as any sales during the plein air event. Work is required to be for sale.

Cash awards will be presented by the jurors, including a Best of Show, Second Place, and Third Place. A People’s Choice Award will be given at the end of the exhibit determined by the total number of votes received during the exhibit. Ballots will be available both in the galleries and online.

All work is insured against physical damage or loss, less the 30% commission, from time of receipt by WCAC through the designated date and time of pick-up.

The decision of the jurors is final. All accepted work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit. WCAC reserves the right to photograph artwork and artists for publicity and educational purposes and to use images of submitted work for the same purposes. WCAC reserves the right to reject work not suitably presented. All work must be original, no reproductions (including giclee, commercially printed, or computer-generated reproductions of paintings, drawings, etc.) Submission of an entry constitutes understanding and agreement with all conditions mentioned in this prospectus.

    • Saturday, June 4, 2022 – Artist Check In, 10am-4pm
    • Saturday, June 11, 2022 – Artist Check In, 10am-4pm
    • Saturday, June 18, 2022 – Artist Check In, 10am-4pm
    • Saturday, June 25, 2022 – Artist Check In, 10am-4pm.
  • Art Preparation: Artists have one month to prepare their paintings for hanging.
  • Drop-off artwork:
    • Friday, July 29, 2022, 11am to 5pm
    • Saturday, July 30, 2022, 10am to 4pm
    • Tuesday, August 2, 2022, 11am to 5pm
  • Juried Exhibit opens to the public: Thursday, August 4, 2022
  • Virtual Exhibit opens online: Saturday, August 6, 2022
  • Exhibit closes: Tuesday, September 6, 2022, 3pm
