Art has always been part of my life. Growing up in Maine, the daughter of an artist, I was constantly “making things”, and the urge to create has never left me. I studied art in college, with a focus upon abstraction. Upon moving to Pennsylvania I became enamored with the landscape; I am unfailingly inspired by the beauty of our state’s forests, orchards and fields. Whether rendered abstractly or realistically, with etchings, pastels or colored pencils, my goal is to bring a reverence for the natural landscape into our living spaces.

Winter Orchard

Winter Orchard is an etching, created with aquatint and rolled color. The subject is a cherry orchard on Salem Road in Chambersburg, near my daughter's house. I just loved how the farm lane recedes between the trees - and was very startled when, the next summer, it had disappeared due to the branches bending low with the weight of the fruit!

Windblown

Windblown is an etching printed with dark green ink; before I put the inked plate on the printing press, I rolled yellow oil paint over the top of it - this is called using rolled color.

Seaside Field

Seaside Field is an etching depicting a field in northern Maine, along the coast near where the author E.B. White lived. I worked for an entire day to get the aquatint printed the way I envisioned the scene - and the plate is only 4 inches wide!

Treeline in Fog

I was painting at a friend's house: she'd invited me over to see a wonderful patch of Virginia Bluebells - a brilliant blue patch in a shady woods. I worked and worked, and when I had to get up and stretch, I turned and saw this distant line of pines, almost hidden by a mist. That was the picture I wanted: I never did get a good painting out of those bluebells: no structure!
